The DCB Index provides insights into the direct carrier billing market of countries in the Middle East and Africa region (MEA), ranking them according to their current DCB status and potential to further develop this growth-boosting mobile payment method. The classification ranges from 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest and 5 the highest DCB potential. The ranking is based on four main factors: mobile players’ actions to prevent fraud on DCB, their bent to innovate in DCB, the country’s overall DCB penetration, and the DCB growth potential.

According to the results of the DCB Index, South Africa is the leading country in the ranking, with the highest score (3.4 out of 5). In the Middle East and North Africa, Morocco and the UAE stand out, surpassing last year’s leader, Bahrain. Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo also rank highly, with 3.1 and 3.0 respectively.

DCB has proven to be a powerful payment tool in the MEA region, and the overall fraud prevention of mobile players has increased by 0.2 compared to 2021, showing a collective willingness to safeguard this technology. DCB has the potential to become even more powerful than credit cards, and mobile operators have all the advantages to elevate DCB and become major fintech companies. However, it is important that businesses protect DCB with the right cybersecurity solutions.

The DCB Index is intended to provide mobile players with an overview of the development of DCB in the MEA region, helping them to better understand how to improve their business in their own country or what conditions to consider when deploying in other countries.

For the GCBS 2022 in Berlin, the Mobile Ecosystem Forum’s Director of Programmes James Williams interviewed David Lotfi, CEO at Evina, about his 15 years of experience in the DCB market.

1. You are known in the ecosystem as the CEO and founder of Evina. Can you tell us more about yourself and how you came to start Evina?

I am a telecom engineer. At the very beginning of my career, I interned at a Parisian startup that sold services via DCB, stayed there for a while, worked my way up and soon became the CTO. In 2013, particularly pernicious fraud schemes started to appear on the market, which had a strong impact on our business. With my team at the time, I developed a dedicated anti-fraud solution. This project was a great success and soon several MNOs asked me if they could use my solution as they realized that only our DCB services didn’t generate any complaints. I was convinced that it needed to be developed further because cybersecurity had become a necessity to ensure longevity of the DCB payment world. I bought full ownership of the technology and founded Evina with those who had helped me make this disruptive technology a reality.

2. Carrier billing is a promising industry, but very often it develops under the radar of the start-up world and VCs. You have recently raised more than 20 million euros from an American VC. How did you get their attention?

Forward-thinking VCs understand the advantages that DCB has over other payment methods and that in a competitive environment, betting on DCB makes a lot of sense. DCB is a payment method that offers conversion rates up to 10 times higher than that of credit cards, allows seamless payment flows and ensures a particularly high level of user data protection. The only missing piece in many parts of the world is cybersecurity though.

The first action that truly allows DCB to flourish in regions where DCB is booming is always cybersecurity. We are fortunate to have partnered with a fund that is perfectly aligned with our vision: DCB will become one of the main payment methods of the future and its extreme security will make this possible. This is a great sign for the whole ecosystem of a bright future.

3. You’ve now been working in the DCB industry for more than 15 years. What are the key changes in the industry you’ve seen over the years?

This experience allowed me to personally experience the first golden age of DCB and then the eruption of fraud. This era created a real movement of solidarity and collaboration between the players in the sector. We’ve seen operators join forces to create best practices and set up self-regulation systems for the sector through the creation of professional associations. We have seen the emergence of working groups on cybersecurity issues in the DCB etc. Whilst all this is a positive step, I believe this isn’t enough. A lot more needs to be done.

A real polarization of the sector between those players who are betting on DCB and its full security through both regulatory framework and technical means and those who rely on the regulatory framework alone has emerged. This is true at both the operator and country level. The operators who gain the most market share are those who invest and secure their payment methods by using state-of-the-art technology, and the countries where DCB is most successful are the countries where it is best protected.

4. Why have the regulatory efforts and the self-discipline of the industry players not been enough to stop the fraud?

Because we are talking about a technology area for which the law or best practice recommendations alone can only be expected to provide a partial solution. Fraud has become automated and cybercriminals have rapidly developed new forms of attacks, by hacking DCB using advanced malware. It’s therefore necessary to provide a technological solution capable of adapting continuously and enforcing regulations. This means significant and ongoing investments over a period of years to be able to identify new forms of fraud and to stop them in their tracks.

5. What is the real impact on players who are not fully aware of this technical fraud?

The most immediate impact is the limitation of the activity. Many players have simply limited their DCB activity and have implemented more restrictive rules concerning their partners or the use of technology. This limits the universality of DCB payments and makes them progressively less competitive. The worst thing is of course that the lengthening of payment flows, the introduction of One-Time Passwords, and other restrictions cannot stop fraud, but it does drastically limit the activity. In most cases, growth is limited and the company stagnates trying to cope with the fraud. In the long run, the main risk is to be forced into shutting down, at least temporarily, because of a major attack.

6. What are the players with the highest growth and profitability in DCB doing to succeed?

They work on these basic fundamentals: conversion rates, end-user satisfaction, latency, and the quality of the partners they work with.

The ideal for the consumer is to pay in one click on an optimized merchant site, and with complete peace of mind.

To achieve this ideal, the best players trust their partners to build the most optimal payment paths, they take full advantage of all DCB has to offer and attract partners that are particularly valued by the end user. To do this, they invest in the right technology solutions that allow them to trust their partners and control their business. And this is what a great cybersecurity solution can offer, capable of tracking the entire sales funnel, having total visibility of the flows and stopping cybercriminal attacks.

The future of DCB is bright and we’ve reached unprecedented levels of satisfaction with our customers. And this is just the beginning for our industry. Juniper Research estimates that the market will reach nearly $100 billion by 2026, with the most secure players capturing a majority share of that pie. And by protecting themselves, they will grow the DCB market well beyond that level.

A pandemic and financial need that sculpted the future of mobile money

During the now two-year pandemic, the digital world has seen a noticeable increase in online activity, more specifically mobile activity. The need to not rely on physical banks or handle physical money has fueled the surge in mobile money transactions. In fact, according to the GSMA, 1.21 billion mobile money accounts were registered in 2020 marking a 12.7% growth, in 96 countries. The GSMA also states that the transaction values increasingly grew as well, with daily transactions exceeding $2 billion and transactions expected to surpass $3 billion per day by the end of 2022.

This year also marked a spike in investments in the digital payments space, starting with fintechs and mobile money services. As mobile phone users are expected to reach half of the African continent’s population by 2025 according to the GSMA, internet penetration increases, and overall greater adoption of digital financial services, investors are betting all on mobile financial services. Just last month, Airtel Africa’s mobile money service received a $50 million investment by Chimera investments, backed by a previous $25 million investment by Mastercard. Mobile money is a particularly versatile payment tool that is used for a variety of different purposes, particularly in countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Mobile money is used to receive a monthly salary, pay bills, lend money, and make purchases online or in physical stores.

The attention mobile money has received by investors foreshadows the tremendous potential of mobile money this year. Mobile operators looking to pave the smoothest way for this explosive growth must first address the organizational body of their mobile money services.

More independent mobile money services entities for robust growth in 2022

Regulators of mobile operators have a well-defined set of regulations they must follow that specifically pertain to the telecommunication services they offer. As we have seen, mobile operators have been developing their financial potential and deploying mobile money services that have gained paramount daily transaction value. In most cases, MNOs have to comply with both the telco regulations and stricter mobile money regulations. This is extremely costly and complicated for mobile operators who must enforce a myriad of regulations.

What we have seen in recent years, and what we will continue to see in 2022, is mobile operators creating a separate mobile money entity to be able to grow their business with greater ease and flexibility, following only specific mobile money regulations. Major mobile operators such as Orange and Airtel have initiated this organizational reconstruction, respectively with Orange Money and Airtel Money. Thanks to this set up mobile operators will be able to make their mobile money services a separate, independent company with the freedom to grow and become what it strives to be: a fintech.

Fintechs in Africa have raised nearly $5 billion in 2021, and as sole mobile money providers, the companies will attract even more investments. Investors will be lured by the youngness of the business, where there is sill be room to grow and to decide what direction the child company can take.

The freedom will also lie in the tools that mobile money providers can choose. The giant mobile operators already have dedicated tools and integrated processes for each specific activity, even when it comes to dealing with fraud. As a separate entity, the company can decide to choose the right anti-fraud tools, which are specific to a fintech company and the specific fraud-related challenges it faces. Mobile money can’t be treated like telecommunications, neither with the same regulations nor with the same anti-fraud solutions. Mobile money has its own specific needs, and with it, its own specific solutions. At Evina, we’ve developed a whole range of anti-fraud solutions that sustain mobile operators, to not only detect fraud but to do so while growing the business revenue. For mobile money, we have designed Mobile Money protect, a cutting-edge anti-fraud solution that tackles fraud attempts on mobile money services.

Along with the creation of the separate mobile money entity, there is a critical need to convince regulators to create enabling regulations for these entities to grow.

Strengthened trust vis-à-vis the regulator and anti-fraud measures

With the growing value of daily mobile money transactions, central banks and major regulators are seeking to regulate the large flow of money and protect the interests of all stakeholders. When fraud comes into play, regulators will automatically impose stricter rules that will limit the growth of mobile operators because they cannot be trusted to regulate themselves. It’s why it is in the interest of mobile operators to keep fraud at bay and have the right tools to manage these attacks. Major operators such as Airtel have already raised concerns regarding fraud on mobile money « What keeps me up at night frankly is the risks that are emerging through cyber [crime] » CEO of Airtel mobile commerce BV.

We have seen this phenomenon in plenty of markets: when responsible players implement Evina state-of-the-art anti-fraud solutions, entire markets have reaped the benefits, and payment methods such as direct carrier billing have been restored thanks to this renewed trust. Mobile Money Protect, Evina’s anti-fraud solution for mobile money payments, was designed to fend off fraud attacks on mobile money and help mobile operators reach new opportunities.

This new year will be vital for mobile operators to explore where fraud-free mobile money will take them, as independent entities and in an environment that fosters growth with empowering regulators.

Yet, as we’ve explained in greater detail in the DCB index created in partnership with Telecoming, the state of DCB and its development aren’t homogeneous. For this reason, players can’t approach its growth in the same manner, and with the same anti-fraud solutions. Here is our advice to ensure the best DCB development in 2022.

A DCB market facing “healthy issues”

This type of market condition is the ideal situation. Here, fraud is no longer unmanageable because the mobile players in the ecosystem have found the right tools to keep fraud at bay. The trust between players is strong enough to continue to make payments through the carrier billing channel.

The most common challenge facing mobile operators and merchants is learning how to manage the strong growth of user purchases through DCB. Oftentimes, this surge in growth brings along an increase of issues related to user awareness regarding their purchases. Landing pages must follow a clear deontological chart to make the entire purchasing experience clear to the user, with no misleading buttons and information. User complaints are the most frequent issue encountered in healthy DCB markets.

To manage user complaints, Evina offers a simple brand safety solution to track flows of traffic and determine the level of compliance of ad placements. The solution makes it easy to identify content providers that generate fraudulent traffic, hence that are the source that generates user complaints. Evina Eyewitness is the other solution that is tailor-made for this situation, as the first solution in the world able to record data-enriched videos of what users actually see and do on the payment page. It saves time and money in complaints management and helps all players to maintain trustful and transparent relationships.

Dormant DCB markets that are ready to reflourish in 2022

When mobile players who offer DCB are not able to establish a solid level of trust among merchants, payment aggregators, mobile operators, and regulators, this payment method is quick to fail. The element of trust is disrupted by levels of unmanaged fraud, and unfortunately, it results in the suspension of direct carrier billing. We’ve seen this situation numerous times, here is the perfect example.

Sometimes, all it takes to reopen a DCB flow is partnering with one merchant that has proven to bring healthy traffic with low user complaint rates by working with the right anti-fraud partner. As the mobile operator realizes the potential of DCB payment flows, other partners will implement the anti-fraud solutions to protect and quickly install this quick and easy payment channel.

In this case, mobile operators can suggest merchants implement the core anti-fraud solution to detect and help block fraud attempts, Evina DCBprotect. DCBprotect is powered by cutting-edge technology that detects 99,94% of fraudulent transactions, with a 0,06% false-positive rate and <100ms latency, assuring not only the best protection but also maximizing legitimate transactions and increasing DCB revenue.

DCB markets in critical fraud situations

Another situation we often see is markets where DCB is operational, yet heavily endangered by fraud attacks. Cybercriminals are hooked on these kinds of markets that haven’t adequately protected their mobile payment channels as they prey on the weakest links, with minimal to no anti-fraud protection.

High levels of fraud compromise the trust between mobile operators and merchants, and jeopardize the existence of DCB. In fact, we have dealt with situations where mobile operators have resorted to shutting down DCB altogether, thinking there was no other way.

The solution here is to start protecting DCB as quickly as possible with the most effective anti-fraud solutions, starting with Evina DCBprotect. In addition to the core solution, players can implement the aforementioned solutions Evina Eyewitness and brand safety, to meet specific needs and reduce user complaints, after solving the heart of the problem.

Safety Detectives: Please share your company background, how you got started, and your mission.

Evina: In 2013, widespread fraud began to emerge in the mobile payments market operated by mobile operators, and in response, David Lotfi, at the time a CTO working at a technology company, developed a highly successful anti-fraud solution.

Five years later, David bought back full ownership of his anti-fraud solution, and with the help of his former employees, founded Evina: the most advanced cybersecurity solutions for mobile payments. Evina was founded with the belief that it was possible for MNOs, merchants, and payment gateways to achieve high levels of economic growth if fraud is blocked the right way.

Today, Evina’s anti-fraud solutions secure over +16 million transactions in more than 70 countries each day, decrease complaint rates, maximize the number of legitimate transactions, and increase revenues.

Evina’s mission is to support the new business opportunities created by the Internet and to enable mobile players to thrive instead of being hindered by fraud.

SD: What is the main service your company offers?

Evina: We provide MNOs and all players offering mobile payment solutions with a suite of anti-fraud solutions to secure mobile payments, from direct carrier billing to mobile money, and simultaneously increase their revenue.

Evina’s flagship product, DCBprotect, detects fraudulent attempts on mobile payments so that mobile players can maximize the number of legitimate transactions, and increase their revenue by channeling the power of carrier billing.

MobileMoneyProtect detects in real-time fraudulent money transfers, local and international, either when users are being defrauded or when the MNO is being defrauded (commission fraud).

All our products aim to show the true potential of secured mobile payments and allow businesses to reap the benefits of reduced fraud and maximized revenue growth.

SD: What is something unique that helps you stay ahead of your competition?

Evina: Our 15+ years in research and development, cybersecurity experts, and cutting-edge anti-fraud technology that detects 99.94% of fraud attempts with <100ms latency, enable us to provide the most advanced market solutions to mobile players. Evina is equipped with an ultrahigh definition 3D footprint that captures online fraudulent behavior with the most sophisticated fraud sensors, enabling us to distinguish a transaction initiated by a human from that initiated from a bot, resulting in a false-positive rate of 0.06% – equal to no other.

Our edge computing treats and stores data closest to the end-user, and our global honeypot network in more than 70 countries attracts fraudsters and reverse-engineers their mechanisms. Our machine learning is continuously fed with millions of transactions analyzed every day, and our Cyber Threat Intelligence analyses threats coming from all sources, including the dark web.

The uniqueness of our solutions is reflected in the results achieved by our customers, such as worldwide mobile operators that, with reduced fraud, have experienced a 5x increase in transaction volume and a 75% complaint rate decrease. Proving that reducing fraud can be synonymous with revenue increase.

SD: What do you think are the worst cyberthreats today?

Evina: The big threat that cyber businesses face today stems not only from fraudsters but also from an underestimation of mobile payment fraud. Fraudsters are stealing money from users and businesses as well as opportunities that could have allowed businesses to reach new levels of prosperity. For example, without fraud and with more trust, quick and easy one-click payments could become the most popular payment method.

In addition, we need to prepare today for what awaits tomorrow. As criminal organizations invest heavily in cybercrime, seeking the high scalability and low risk of online crime, fraud will gradually become more and more automated, powered by increasingly sophisticated bots that will simulate users’ voices or fingerprints.

These threats can be managed starting today with the right anti-fraud solutions that are designed to support business growth.

Faezah is a key asset, bringing her substantial 18 years of experience in the mobile payment industry as a top professional to the customer success team at Evina. Her primary focus has always been to meet the needs of customers, whether it be for business development or to support them in implementing anti-fraud solutions tailored to their goals. We were curious about the insights Faezah had gained into the industry, how she saw mobile payments evolving, and how it could help customers make smarter decisions. Here’s what she shared.

What are the major transformations you’ve noticed in the mobile payment industry?

Today, mobile payment is readily available to more people and it is easier than ever to pay with your mobile. It’s the most frictionless micro-payment method on the market, and since almost everyone has a mobile phone nowadays, a large portion of the world’s population can use this means of payment. This is the first big change in the mobile payment industry, compared to when I started 18 years ago, when mobile payments still had a long way to go.

Another, less positive change, is that with the increase in mobile payments, we’ve also seen a rise of fraudulent activities on this payment channel.

I’ve personally noticed that instead of really understanding the cause of the problem or looking for a solution, mobile operators and regulators have imposed stricter regulations and marketing guidelines. These restrictions simply made it impossible to convert the payment flow in some cases, and in other extreme cases, they’ve shut down carrier billing altogether.

This solution did work, to a certain extent. Complaint rates went down, but so have conversion rates. If a payment flow isn’t attractive, for example the payment page isn’t user-friendly, potential users will be less likely to follow through and complete their transaction. Of course, this also means less revenue for the digital merchant, payment aggregator, and MNO. In addition to this, unattractive payment flows are seen as a window of opportunity for fraudsters. They can find ways to deceive the user, such as creating a fake, more attractive payment page on top of the authentic payment page, with a button that tricks the user into subscribing to a service.

Now, where will mobile payments go next?

A few years ago many kept saying that mobile payments would disappear in no time. This was due to the increasing amount of fraudulent activities resulting in merchants getting suspended, cut off, and terminated by the carriers and regulators. But as you may have noticed, mobile payments are still booming. The industry knows how to adapt, new technologies are being invented, and today it’s still the most frictionless way to make a payment, when done right. If properly implemented, protected( with the right anti-fraud solutions), and sustained by the right partners, I know mobile payments will continue to flourish. There is still a tremendous amount of revenue to be made.

What advice would you give to businesses that have invested in cybersecurity but are unsure of the effects of anti-fraud solutions on mobile payments?

I would say: you’ve made an incredible investment. The money you have invested in cybersecurity will come right back to you, and more importantly, it can double. This will leave you with more opportunities to invest in and more room to grow. But for that to happen, you can’t partner up with any cybersecurity company. You have to partner with an independent, cybersecurity-focused company, with cutting-edge technology like Evina.

Fraud can really damage your business. Fraudulent traffic not only tarnishes your reputation and product credibility, it will also generate a lot of issues and lost revenue down the road, if not immediately.

Many merchants pay a high price for traffic of unknown credibility because they don’t have an anti-fraud solution in place. The ability to optimize your traffic quality and media spend by properly filtering out bad traffic will not only increase your profits, but also protect your revenue. Believe me, all carriers would love to have good, reputable and credible merchants on their side, making revenue with manageable complaints!

As the whole world rejoices for the beginning of this new year, there are several events that took place in 2020 that we wish to remember and celebrate at Evina. To this end, we made a list of seven reasons why 2020 shouldn’t entirely be disregarded.

1 – The mobile payment industry struck back against fraud

The Mobile Ecosystem Forum (MEF) published an insightful whitepaper on how to combat fraud in mobile content and held a webinar to discuss the challenges further. As a newly joined member, Evina contributed with its expertise alongside other industry players, to educate the market about fraud.

2 – The results are in: efforts made to fight fraud are rewarding

Mobile payment has great potential in Africa, which could easily be unleashed once fraud is dealt with and mobile carriers take back control. Our CEO David Lotfi tells us more about the endless opportunities that derive from fraud-free mobile payments in the Northern African Wireless Communications publication (pages 24 and 25).

3 – An accelerated digitalization of all industries due to the pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the digitalization of many of our habitual activities: from relationships to online transactions. The digital world made way for a huge flow of traffic, money, and prosperity. However fraudsters are always just around the corner when money is involved, yet this time we had the right tools to face them. Industry players advised on how to adapt and overcome the increase in fraud in our new digital reality.

4 – The anti-fraud black belt in cyber self-defense is now unlocked

Certain tools are required to win against fraud the right way, in fact, it’s never been this easy to combat fraud. David Lotfi shared his tips and tricks on how to respond to the inevitable encounter with fraud.

5 – Innovation and commitment: the winners in the fight against fraud

The new generation of digital experts has arrived, pushing the boundaries of the industry to a whole new level. This year’s Global Direct Carrier Billing awards have confirmed this, awarding Evina as Best Carrier Billing Fraud Solution alongside our partners (Digital Virgo, PM Connect, and Play), which we couldn’t be prouder of.

6 – From an expense to a source of profit: cybersecurity is a must-have.

Cybersecurity went from being a burdensome cost for businesses to a source of revenue. Philip Vannier, President of the European Cybersecurity Organization (ECSO) and Big Data and security expert, gave us his input on the digital market, what is to come, and agreed that better-protected networks mean fewer barriers, faster transactions, and more revenue for everyone.

7 – Without fraud, businesses have reached a whole new level of business growth

Belgian mobile operator Proximus has proved that with the right tools, it is possible to decrease fraud and complaint rates, and boost revenue on carrier billing. With the help of Evina, fighting fraud unlocks business growth.

This year we must lay the groundwork for a healthy mobile industry and business growth by relying on those who drive technological advances. David Lotfi, founder and CEO of Evina, shares the three cyber tech challenges that all businesses will face this year and the ultimate solution to overcome it all in order to build a more prosperous and fraud-free internet.

5G: A new network in its infancy stage

The much-awaited 5G is expected to cover 32% of the global population – about 2.5 billion people – by 2022, according to research by Bankr. This extremely fast network that promises reduced latency doesn’t mean it’s more secure compared to the older 3G and 4G networks. Unfortunately, it’s the contrary, since the protocols involved are brand new, they are not 100% foolproof and vulnerabilities are being discovered all too frequently. We must keep in mind that 5G is still at its infancy stage and it will be a long run until it reaches the maturity of the 4G network. In fact, traditional attacks such as spoofing, user impersonation, and fraud are still expected, and as 5G will extend to connectivity with IoT devices – the vulnerabilities aren’t limited. Whether we like it or not, 5G is the future of connectivity, so the challenge we now face and the question we must ask ourselves is: How do we securely transition to 5G considering its infant stage makes it more prone to vulnerabilities?

Paying back the cybersecurity debt

Cybersecurity issues were trending in 2020, as many companies faced data breaches and high fraud rates. The issues relating to cyber-attacks were sometimes evident, creating enormous international buzz, and sometimes less evident with mobile operators seeing customer complaint rates rise because of disregarded fraud issues. Due to a lack of time, budget, and/or information these companies have unwillingly gone to create an enormous cybersecurity debt by not addressing the security question, meaning fraud rates, complaint rates and churn rates have increased and will reach all-time high levels if left untreated in 2021. Certain markets are bound to face an upcoming crisis due to the aforementioned companies that have not yet dealt with fraud the right way.

The first step to approach fraud the right way is to make the right cybersecurity investments for your business. By investing in anti-fraud technology, made to secure your online business from advertising to mobile payments, fraud will be minimized and you will allow your business to thrive in a healthy environment. What does this mean exactly? An increase in revenue that unlocks the growth of your business to new levels.

Organized criminals betting on digital monetization

As we’re all aware, the COVID-19 pandemic was and is still much more than a health crisis. The economic crisis also hit worldwide and no industry was left untouched. However, some sectors found new ways to keep growing by relying more and more on online channels to keep their business going as the digital industry remained barely untouched. It wasn’t before long till organized crime found its place in this new digital reality. In fact, 2020 ended with a massive fraud operation that stole millions from online bank accounts by using emulators to mimic phones and access their bank accounts. The American telco T-Mobile also had to deal with a data breach, the second breach in a year to be exact, that stole precious data including customers’ account information. Organized criminals are betting on mobile payment and investing in hackers to do the dirty work. Cybercriminals have a lot of tricks up their sleeves, and something tells me they won’t be merciful in 2021. It’s clear that we must protect our online business this year more than ever.

The challenges we face in 2021, from organized criminals going full-on digital to a vulnerable 5G network in its infant stage and a growing cybersecurity debt, all have a solution in common: the right cybersecurity investment. Not challenging the fraud that your company faces, and that will undoubtedly increase, is no longer an option. It’s also no longer a question of dealing with fraud or not, it has come down to the survival of your company. My advice to you is: if you want to see your business not just survive but thrive in a challenging digital era, it’s time to invest smartly in cybersecurity.

What role will you be carrying out at Evina?

At Evina, I have joined the CSM team as Solution Engineer. Considering my technical expertise and my experience on the client-side, I will be helping with a range of tasks including:

Onboard clients and make sure they have a 360° vision of our anti-fraud solution.

Be the technical medium between clients and our internal team of tech experts for seamless integration on both sides.

Make sure both technical and data needs are taken into account, so that products are continuously adapted to client needs and so that we can deliver full data reports.

Now tell us a little bit about you and your experience in mobile payment.

A big part of my tech career has been shaped by my six years at HighConnexion, a mobile marketing and payment company, where I started out as a Web Developer and ended up as Lead Developer and Tech Manager. I witnessed, and also took part in, the full transformation of the mobile payment market and its exponential growth.

When I started out in this market, we talked about Value Added Services (VAS) and everything was still to be uncovered. Two years after joining HighConnexion I entirely rewrote the management system for digital subscriptions and introduced techniques like donations by SMS. This new system further developed to become the direct billing platform we know today. This is how we won over most of our online media clients, including major French media companies.

This exciting market presents so many opportunities as well as challenges regarding fraud that need to be overcome. I wanted to be part of this again, but this time I wanted to join a company like Evina, which brings an ingenious anti-fraud solution to the industry and helps companies like HighConnexion, that need an independent and cutting-edge player.

What are the fraud challenges you encountered in your previous experiences and how did you overcome them?

I’ve already been acquainted with fraud. While working at HighConnexion, we encountered fraudulent activities through our payment platform as most mobile payment players do. However, we dealt with fraud internally the following way: mobile operators would notice fraudulent traffic and alert HighConnexion, asking us to analyze traffic from a specific time frame. HighConnexion then had to ask merchants to give them proof of traffic. So we directly took care of managing fraud, without a dedicated anti-fraud service/solution. And we regularly received requests from major French MNOs to analyze fraud. You can see how ineffective and frustrating this can be. Even though we had the fraud issue at heart, we lacked the external expertise that only a cybersecurity-focused firm could provide.

If only we had had an anti-fraud solution such as Evina’s Eyewitness, it would have been a whole different story. As the first solution in the world able to record data-enriched videos of what users actually see and do on the payment page, it would have saved time and money in complaints management. In addition, it would have helped to maintain trustful and transparent relationships with all partners and clients.
